Starting a game of Hearts of Iron 4, players are able to choose from two distinct modes. If you want to play as a Venezuelan fascist with two army divisions and 12 fighter planes, you can give it a go With Hearts of Iron 4, Paradox has dared to allow players to feel stupid. Instead, Hearts of Iron 4 has challenged what I know about history, about military strategy and about mid-20th-century geopolitics. It's not hard like a roguelike is hard, and it's not difficult in the way that a flight simulation or a hardcore shooter is difficult. But I don't mean "challenged" in the traditional sense. Hearts of Iron 4 has challenged me at a foundational level. But unlike those other games, Hearts of Iron 4 isn't a sandbox it's a game deeply rooted in the real history of World War II.

Hearts of Iron 4 is a grand strategy wargame from Paradox Interactive, makers of famously complex titles like Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis and, most recently, Stellaris.

Use navy for shore bombardment if possible.Hearts of Iron 4 is the single most challenging game I've played in the last decade. Make sure you attack key provinces from multiple angles to maximize width(simultaneous shooting).Īlways(literally) do what you can to keep air superiority, and bomb land units. While the defensive units are spaced out along the whole front line, I position my aggressive units in the areas where the terrain will make them successful - like plains with few rivers, etc. For instance a infantry only for holding the front line in a defensive matter, and smaller armies with breakthrough capabilities for punching through enemy front lines. I split my armies into groups that work well for their objectives. Maxing out to 24 is convenient, but probably not the most efficient use of divisions(unless you have tons). Logistics is only necessary in areas with poor infrastructure, like Africa.įor army size, it depends. Engineers help if you need to cross lots of rivers. Construct divisions that have a high breakthrough. Also include artillery support, or even include self propelled artillery if you can. Maintenance support is wise to reduce costly armor loss. If you plan to be aggressive, use as much armor as you can produce, balanced with motorized infantry to improve organization. If you are low on manpower, use field hospital. If you must be defensive, use infantry with support from artillery and engineers. As any question like this, the answer is: it depends.
